Protector: Musicians, Singers, Makers of Ribbons, Braid and
Buttons, Teachers and Popes.
Born around 540 into a powerful aristocratic Roman family. Gregory
completed law studies before entering the service of the state. After a
few years he chose the monastic life, founding monasteries and
dedicating himself to the needy. Made pope in 590, he was active in
works of charity and missions. He contributed to the development of
the Roman liturgy as well as to church music, most especially
Gregorian chant. He left important pastoral, moral, and spiritual
works. He died in 604, and his cult spread immediately.
He is often depicted in papal robes with the dove of inspiration and a
book and is invoked against the plague and gout.
